Đi xem lại Kubo lần thứ 2 vì sau lần 1 đã quá thích, và muốn ủng hộ một studio tuyệt vời như LAIKA, và mình nhận ra là có quá nhiều thứ mình đã bỏ lỡ, bỏ quên, hoặc không nhận ra từ lần xem đầu tiên. Lần này đi xem, mình đã có nhiều sự tập trung hơn vào cốt truyện và những chủ đề và thông điệp ẩn dụ đằng sau những mồ hôi công sức của tập thể studio đã đổ vào kỹ thuật stop motion cho phim.

Như review trước mình đã từng nói, chủ đề lớn nhất của Kubo and the Two strings chính là sức mạnh của các “câu chuyện”, và suốt chiều dài bộ phim, hầu như bất cứ chi tiết nào cũng đều được xây dựng một cách cực kỳ tinh tế để truyền tải chính xác điều này. Chỉ cần bạn “chớp mắt” hay mất tập trung dù chỉ một chút, đúng như lời hướng dẫn của Kubo khi cậu bé kể chuyện cho mọi người trong làng, bạn sẽ bỏ lỡ rất nhiều điều quan trọng, và rất có thể “người anh hùng” trong câu chuyện mà bạn đang theo dõi sẽ bị “khuất phục”. Có lẽ chưa bao giờ có một bộ phim nào lại miêu tả nguyên tắc số một khi xem phim của chính bản thân mình một cách thấm thía đến như thế này, nhưng nguyên tắc này đặc biệt chính xác khi miêu tả về chính bộ phim.

Mình thuộc dạng người mà một khi đã thưởng thức một tác phẩm nghệ thuật nào đó, và mình có thể nhìn ra, cảm nhận được những giá trị, chủ đề ẩn đằng sau những điều nổi trên bề mặt thì mình sẽ cảm thấy cực kỳ sung sướng, kích động một cách khó có thể tưởng tượng nổi. Cứ tưởng tượng trong đầu mình thường xuyên có 1 thằng không ngừng gào thét ầm ỹ, điên cuồng mỗi khi tìm ra những điều mà bình thường không có nhiều người có thể nhìn thấy như mình. Kubo and the Two Strings chính là một bộ phim cho mình chính xác cái cảm xúc đó. Suốt chiều dài bộ phim, mình cảm thấy như không thể chớp mắt nổi, không dám dừng lại để thở vì sợ rằng sẽ bỏ lỡ mất một điều kỳ diệu nào đó trong phim. Suốt chiều dài bộ phim, trong từng khung hình, từng giây phút, mình đều cảm nhận được những điều không tưởng mà các họa sĩ của LAIKA đã dốc hết ruột gan, tâm trí vào để thực hiện. Suốt chiều dài bộ phim, mình đã khóc không ngừng nghỉ, không chỉ vì một câu chuyện quá truyền cảm, quá thấm thía và tinh tế trong từng nhịp điệu, từng lời thoại và phương pháp kể chuyện, mà vì mình có thể “nhìn” thấy bàn tay của tất cả những họa sĩ ở LAIKA đang nhích từng chút một những chi tiết từ nhỏ nhất, những chăm chút cho từng thiết kế chất liệu, thiết kế khung xương, ngay cả những người phải ngồi tính toán X-sheet animation cho các nhân vật trong phim trong suốt cả một thời gian dài để làm ra được một kiệt tác nghệ thuật không có giới hạn đến thế này. Suốt chiều dài bộ phim, trong tâm trí mình chỉ có duy nhất một suy nghĩ “đây chính là điều mà mình muốn làm, đây chính là ý nghĩa của cuộc đời mình, đây chính là điều mà mình có thể sống chết vì nó, chính là thứ khiến cho mình có thể trở nên điên cuồng và rồ dại”. Và mình cảm thấy tất cả những con người đã chung tay thực hiện bộ phim này chính là những người đã bằng chính bàn tay của họ, biến giấc mơ của mình thành hiện thực trên màn ảnh. Họ chính là những người mà mình tôn thờ nhất trên cuộc đời này. Hãy cứ thử nghĩ rằng Neyman trong Whiplash thay vì đánh trống, mà chọn làm phim hoạt hình, thì chắc hẳn bộ phim mà anh ta làm được sẽ chính là một bộ phim giống như Kubo. Câu hỏi đặt ra là “bạn đã thực sự phát điên vì điều mình đam mê hay chưa?” Và đó sẽ chính là câu hỏi bạn cần hỏi chính mình trong từng phút của cuộc đời nếu như bạn không muốn phí hoài nó vào những điều hời hợt, trống rỗng.

Ms. Dark Dragon – female Vietnamese inspired pirate – Queen of the East Sea – one of my favourite assignments in the character design class I just took this last semester of Fall 2014. This design focuses on picking out iconic, recognizable, interesting details that contribute well to the overall design, giving it a fantasy vibe, and less about cultural or historical accuracy. Top left corner are some exploration thumbnail sketches I did that included a lot of research I did from various sources about Vietnamese attires.

WANTED – Character Design

Wanted – Cowboy character design. He’s basically a hunchback bounty hunter with an eye patch, and he’s bald. His name is literally is “Wanted”. First assignment for character design class. Came out pretty great I think.

Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four, one of my first ever comic book movie/American comic group of characters that I’ve ever known, and they’re still one of my top favourite with their super cool villains and awesome powers. I used to draw them all the time after seeing the 2 movies made by Fox in 2005, but there have been so many great comic book movies since then that I kinda forgot about them. So here’s another interpretation of mine for the family of heroes and their arch nemesis Doctor Doom. If it ever happens in my life time, this is kinda what I imagine them as a cartoon show.

Is anyone here obsessed with Guardians of the Galaxy like I am? I’ve seen the movie twice in theatre and listened to the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 thousands of time and still want more. So here’s a little tribute I did for one of/if not the best Marvel studios’ movie yet. This is what I imagine a cartoon version of the movie should look like.

Saint Giong

Saint Giong riding his Metal horse into battle with a flaming bush of bamboos for a weapon.

Saint Giong – a legend from Vietnamese mythology. He didn’t speak a word until he was 3. When our country was invaded and called for volunteers into the army, he started talking and the first thing he asked for was lots of rice to eat. After meals after meals, he stood up and in a blink of an eye, turned into a gigantic and powerful adult man. The Emperor made him a metal armor, and a metal horse, with which he rode into the battle and defeated the enemy like a walk in the park. When his weapon was broken, he pulled a bush of bamboos out of the ground and used it to fight off the rest of the invaders. When the war ended and the country in peace, he rode his metal horse straight for heaven and never came back. People made shrines and temples in his tribute and worship him as a Saint.

A short animation test sequence I did in class ANM 362 – Traditional Animation 3, instructed by Michael Vickner, with my original character Louis. The sequence includes a character design turn around and some character exploration sketches.

The sequence Won First Place in the category 2D animation test at the Animation Spring Show Festival at the Academy of Art University, School of Animation and VFX.

The God of Thunder

The Vietnamese equivalent to Thor. His name – Thien Loi, literally means “Sky lightning (or Sky Thunder)”, and he’s the God of Thunder in Vietnamese mythology. Usually he wields an axe and guards the gateway to the Kingdom of Heaven, and protects Ngoc Hoang (The King of Heaven). This was done for Sketch_dailies but I’d like to push it even further in the design, this one is still a work in progress inspired by some stage plays.

These are some fun animation I did with my original character/avatar/persona… whatever you call it – The Wolf. One of them was based on Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Brave

Someone suggested me to draw a Brave fan art the other day. And I did it. I rarely draw any Pixar/Disney’s fan art since they have perfect designs for the characters already, any attempt at recreating those marvels into my own style is not worth it. But then again, drawing is fun.

After 3 months of the summer animating from time to time gradually, I finally finished this short animation test for the characters from DC Comics’ Justice League for personal practice. I set for myself a time limit of approximately 5 seconds to show all the powers of each character, including: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Hawk Girl, and Martian Manhunter.

The images of the characters are a little bit different from the character designs because I simplified them a little bit for the sake of animating them easier. This time I got for myself a lot of useful and interesting experience from animating these, more than the last time with The Avengers (watch here www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnTNer… )

The song in this is the Justice League Animated Series Theme Song.

These are done with Photoshop CS and Adobe After Effects. All characters belong to DC Comics, and this animation was done only for educational purpose, no commercial use.

Đây là 1 bộ 2 phần hoạt hình 2D ra thẳng DVD của hãng Warner Bros dựa theo bộ truyện cùng tên của Frank Miller xuất bản vào năm 1986. Chính bộ truyện này là thứ đã mang lại hào quang của nhân vật Batman sau nhiều năm vắng bóng và thất bại, và đã làm hồi sinh Người Hùng Bóng Đêm với một hình ảnh mới hoàn toàn, đen tối hơn, người lớn hơn, bạo lực hơn, với cốt truyện sâu sắc hơn, cảm xúc hơn, và đã truyền cảm hứng cho tất cả các phiên bản Batman từ đó về sau trở nên nghiêm túc hơn chỉ là 1 bộ truyện tranh thiếu nhi như trước.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns có bối cảnh vào cuối những năm 1980, khi Chiến Tranh Lạnh vẫn đang trong thời kỳ căng thẳng. Batman/Bruce Wayne khi đó đa 55 tuổi và đã từ bỏ con đường anh hùng được khoảng 10 năm vì nhiều lý do. Nhưng khi chứng kiến Gotham một lần nữa bị đe dọa bởi 1 băng đảng lưu manh Mutant cực kỳ nguy hiểm, ông già tóc bạc nghiện rượu lại 1 lần nữa khoác lên mình áo choàng con dơi để lập lại trật tự.
